Last week the European Greens (EGP) have launched a petition for a Green New Deal which draws also from my study about the job potential for Green Collar Jobs in Europe.

As much as I agree with the political demands and idea of the petition, I think the EGP could have made a better effort in consulting about the technicalities of these European (online) signature campaigns. Campaigners from OneSeat.eu or europeanreferendum.eu could have pointed out the following points:

  • The petition should attract a wider audience if it ran under its own domain name and not within the European Greens’ website. – Why would any NGO link up to a campaign that is so obviously run by a political party?
  • What is the concrete demand of the petitition? 5 million new jobs? Who is not in favour of that?! I am sure that a petition “Europe needs change and we need your voice to make that change happen. Lets create 5 million jobs – Europe needs a Green New Deal!” would not be formally accepted by any authority.
  • There is no counter. How do I know how many people have signed up? Why can I not have my name published (if I want to)?
  • Would a (promotion) banner not be useful for people like me to include it in their blog comments?
  • Just looking at it again while writing this, the petition really appears like a semi-hidden sub-site of the EGP campaign website which in itself has not really been noticed by too many people from what I can tell… Will anybody besides Green email lists notice?

Here is the full text of the petition from the website www.europeangreens.eu/petition:

“Europe needs change and we need your voice to make that change happen. Lets create 5 million jobs – Europe needs a Green New Deal! There is a way to combat climate change, and there is an answer to the economic crisis. Introducing a Green New Deal we can fight both at the same time. We need policies which will:

* create green collar jobs for five million Europeans within 5 years
* mobilise a cohesive strategy for private and public investment in the green economy  that amounts to 500 billion Euros  over the next five years (0,75% of the GDP of the EU)
* keep energy affordable
* help to fight climate change and green the European economy

The Green New Deal will set the European economy on a sustainable path and place Europe at the forefront of the Green industrial revolution.
Petition
